The Fife Arms

A Victorian coaching inn stands at the centre of Braemar, a Highland village on the edge of the Cairngorms. Iwan and Manuela Wirth, the founders of the gallery Hauser & Wirth, restored it and reopened it in 2018.

Inside, the collection runs to thousands of pieces. Old Scottish antiques share space with modern and contemporary work, and the Chinese artist Zhang Enli painted the drawing-room ceiling. Rooms take their themes from Highland history, local natural history and the royal estates nearby. Balmoral is a short drive down the Dee.

Hotel Monteverdi

Castiglioncello del Trinoro is a tiny hilltop settlement above the Val d'Orcia, the Tuscan valley listed by UNESCO for its farmed landscape. The hotel occupies a group of its old stone buildings.

Restoration kept the thick walls and vaulted ceilings. Contemporary furniture, art and books fill them. Cultural events, with music at their heart, run through the year and give the place its character. Expect quiet lanes, long views across the valley, and very little traffic.

La Réserve Paris

Off the Champs-Élysées, on Avenue Gabriel, sits a nineteenth-century private mansion. It now holds one of the city's smallest luxury hotels. Jacques Garcia designed the interiors.

His brief reads like a collector's townhouse. Silk walls, deep colours, a panelled library and furnishings in the spirit of the Second Empire. Some rooms look out towards the Eiffel Tower. The feeling is closer to a private residence than a grand hotel, which is precisely the point.
