Every winter since 1989, a hotel has been built from the frozen Torne River in the village of Jukkasjärvi, about 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. Every spring it melts back into the water it came from.
Artists chosen each year carve the art suites, so no two seasons look alike. Inside, the air stays a few degrees below zero. Guests sleep in thermal sleeping bags on beds of ice and reindeer hide. Icehotel 365, a permanent building kept cold all year, holds further suites, and warm rooms are available for the rest of a stay.
